A Royal Visit to Brighton

For our third and final chapter on the “Goût Chinois”, we invite you to discover the Brighton Pavilion. Built by George, Prince of Wales (later King George IV), in the late 18th century and redecorated between 1815 and 1822, the Pavilion combines Indian-inspired architecture on the exterior with striking Chinese interiors. 

This extraordinary oriental fantasy inspired many of our Scenic and Architectural Wallpapers. Our Exotic Chinoiserie, for instance, draws inspiration from the Pavilion’s Music Room. Entirely decorated in the Chinoiserie style, it is considered one of the greatest achievements of the royal decorator Frederick Crace. The room has welcomed illustrious figures including the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, Oscar Wilde, who lectured there, and Charles Dickens, who gave readings in this glorious setting.
